The Janitor in the Nexus Folk Mythology, Ascended Memes, and the Conditional Revival of Heroes of the Storm

Image
Abstract For several years, the Heroes of the Storm (HotS) community joked that a lone janitor was keeping the game running while Blizzard looked elsewhere. This post treats that joke as a case study in how player communities explain neglect, absorb it, and eventually have it acknowledged by the developer. It then asks what theoretical benefits a company like Blizzard might draw from this pattern. The revival is very recent, so all conclusions are provisional. Background: From Flagship to "Maintenance Mode" Blizzard released HotS in 2015 as its take on the MOBA genre, with heroes drawn from across its franchises. In 2022, Blizzard announced that the game would enter "maintenance mode," with a skeleton crew focused on stability, limited balance patches, and no new content (Zimmerer, 2026). The last hero added before the drought was Hogger, in December 2020 (Giacomazzo, 2026). Maintenance mode did not mean silence. The game began receiving balance updates again in 20...

Fairness in the Queue: The Secret Lair x MSCHF Zeta Set Sale Failure and Wizards of the Coast's Response

Abstract On September 2, 2026, Wizards of the Coast's Secret Lair storefront launched Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set through its Chaos Vault. Wizards later described the sale as "a disaster." This article reconstructs what failed, then reads the failure and the company's remedy against two bodies of research: scarcity marketing and the psychology of waiting lines. It argues that the technical fault, reportedly an external service disruption, was less damaging than the failure of communication and perceived fairness that followed it. Background The Zeta Set was announced on August 25, 2026, one week before the sale, and was sold only through the Chaos Vault rather than standard retail channels. Secret Lair had never previously sold a set as randomized booster packs. Buyers could purchase up to 12 boosters each. The product therefore carried several risk factors at once: a novel format, a short announcement window, high hype, and a hard supply ceiling.   What Went Wr...

The Emotional Labour of Esports Coaching A Qualitative Discourse Analysis of Publicly Available Media

The Emotional Labour of Esports Coaching: A Qualitative Discourse Analysis of Publicly Available Media Abstract Esports coaching has emerged as a distinct occupational role characterised by high performance expectations, constant public visibility, and intensive interpersonal work with young athletes. While a small but growing body of survey- and interview-based research has begun to document stressors and burnout among esports coaches, far less is known about how the emotional demands of the role are represented outside of the research interview  that is, in the everyday public discourse through which coaches, players, and organisations narrate the job to audiences. This paper develops a nine-category coding framework for the emotional labour of esports coaching  stress, pressure, emotional regulation, conflict, responsibility, failure, burnout, player welfare, and public criticism  grounded in Hochschild's (1983) theory of emotional labour and its extension...
